Wire Metal Chinchilla Cage

When wanting to pick out an appropriate cage for a pet chinchilla or family of these most adorable little rodents, one can use their natural habitat and habits as a guide.  First of all you are going to want to look at metal chinchilla cages because they are the most durable material that will stand up to your pet chinchilla’s habit, just like all rodent species, of chewing on anything and everything they might encounter. Thus one can imagine that a plastic chinchilla cage is not going to stand up to code and even if it is cheaper short term, will cost you a great deal more in the long term due to damage sustained from chewing.

The next decision is how big do you want to make this metal chinchilla cage and the answer is as big as you can. You also not only want it to be big but varied in the obstacles and features that will come with the cage to keep your beloved pet amused. The reason for this is due to the environment the chinchilla species inhabits in the wild. It is the mountainous, South American Andean environment that comes with all the relevant crags, crevices and features that characterize such rugged terrain. Did you know that this little creature can jump up to 6 feet or 1.8 meters in the air? An adaptation to escape predators most likely but also a demonstration of the space this energetic little creature needs.

One final point that argues in favor of a large metal chinchilla cage is the fact that these creatures are social animals and in the wild congregate in large groups called herds. So if you are going to keep a chinchilla as a pet, it is only kind to make it a group of two or more chinchillas so that they can have the company they crave. Also keep in mind that these little rodents can breed any time of the year and quite efficiently, which is again a survival adaptation due to the fact that in the wild they are a prey species for a number of different predators. Thus if you are going to breed them, make sure you provide enough space for a very large family.
