Negotiating with Insurance Companies Yourself

For any victim of an auto accident that wasn’t their fault, one of the hardest things to do is negotiate with the insurance companies for a settlement soon after your accident.  One way to deal with this is to hire a lawyer.  Hiring a lawyer has many advantages.  They bring years of experience to your side of the table, leveling the playing field with the insurance company and making sure that you get the money you are entitled to in complicated cases.  However, not every case is suited for a lawyer.  If you have minor injuries that didn’t cause much pain and suffering or only suffered property damage, hiring a lawyer to negotiate on your behalf could cost more than you gain from it.  The attorney’s cut of the auto accident injury settlements reached with your insurer comes out of money that’s owed to you.  If you’re planning on negotiating with the companies yourself, there are several tips that you can use to make sure that you aren’t taken advantage of.

First, make sure that you’re prepared before the settlement meeting and come up with a range of amounts you’d be willing to accept.  Make sure that you can argue on behalf of your case as to why you’re entitled to more than the insurance company wants to give you.  Make sure the compensation you want to agree on covers all your medical bills, time missed from work, and any other expenses incurred, such as the cost of a rental car.

Car accident compensation claims should also take into account your future expenses.  If you’re still undergoing physical therapy for your injuries make sure that the settlement takes into account the estimated costs of these treatments as well.  It’s a good idea to get a complete physical done by a doctor before you agree to an amount to make sure nothing’s been missed.

Finally, make sure that you know your settlement agreement from front to back including all the fine print.  Make sure that it is what it says it is and there are no tricky clauses.  If you don’t understand something, get a professional opinion on it.  By taking these steps, you’ll make sure that you aren’t taken advantage of in any accident settlement you negotiate yourself.
