Curly Hair Care

Those of you who have naturally curly hair often have a love-hate relationship with your tumbles of twists – that is, other people love it; you hate it.

This is easy to understand. Curly hair is the most unmanageable of hair types. And considering that an estimated 85-90 percent of people with curls have baby fine hair, it is pretty fragile, too. Additionally, curly hair care is important as this hair type tends to be dry as the scalp’s natural oils – called sebum – have a difficult time making it down coiled strands. If all this were not enough, it also tends to be prone to frizziness.

There are a number of things you can do to combat these issues. Refrain from frequent shampooing, which only dries out hair even more. Deep condition curls once a week. Always, always, use a hair product, perhaps a curl enhancer or smoothing cream. Use a diffuser if blow drying, or better yet, shape curls with your fingers and let air dry. Once dry, don’t touch it and never brush it.

But even if you are good at caring for curly hair and are able to maintain your spirals in great condition, it is oh so difficult to get a good cut! (I don’t mean to bring back bad memories, but every curly girl has probably endured the horrific pyramid-shaped hair cut!)

When choosing a new hair stylist, it is always a good idea to get a referral from someone whose hair cuts you admire. But that is not the whole story, and this method can lead you wrong. How? Let’s say the person you ask for a referral has thick, straight hair. Her hairdresser may very well do a great job on your fine, kinky, curly tresses – but then again, maybe not. Curly hair styles can be trickier to cut than other hair types. If you see someone with hair similar to yours sporting a sensational ‘do, don’t be shy. Go ahead and ask her who does her hair. She will love the attention, and you will get a great lead on a professional who is no stranger to curly hair.
