If you are fairly new to scuba diving but want to buy a <a href="http://gr8freearticles.com/scuba-diving-weight-guide/"title="" >diving weight, then hopefully the following short guide will help you find a good quality product at a good price. Start by deciding on whether you need the diving weights on their own or a combined dive weight belt and then keep an eye out for the prices as it may work out cheaper to buy them separately.

A good scuba diving weight belt made of cordura nylon by XS Scuba is both affordable and guaranteed to last. Different weights of 20, 30 and 40 pounds are available are they are recommended by the Scuba Lab Tester. Another well warranteed and thought of product is a set of diving ankle weights from McNett. Both sets of diving weights can be found for great prices online in specialist scuba gear shops.

If you are more of the DIY type, you can have a go at making a diving weight yourself. Watch out for those lead fishing weights when you go diving, collect a stack and buy a mold from Trident to use. You will also need a gas stove and an aluminium pan to complete the process. Bend a spout into the pan before you start and make sure to use a pair of pliers to hold the pan whilst heating. Clean your lead, place it in the pan and smelt away.

A good option to find used dive weights is of course the treasure hunters paradise of Ebay or Craigslist. Keep an eye on the auction listings for a period of time and you are sure to come across some good bargains. You might also come across some second hand weights at a garage sale or through an advert in your local paper. A little bit of research and persistence is bound to pay off.

When you learn how to scuba dive the theory of buoyancy is one of the most important physical concepts that needs to be understood. Being neutrally buoyant throughout the dive is essential for a comfortable dive, conserves air and allows the diver to enjoy his or her dive while giving full attention to routine safety monitoring for both the diver and buddy.

To achieve neutral buoyancy a scuba diver will normally require the addition of weights to the rest of the diving equipment package. When starting out this will often be a simple weight belt with a quick release buckle. As the diver progresses they might be encouraged to buy a stab jacket that has the facility for adding weights to the pockets. This means that the diver can have two quick release weight pockets in place of the often uncomfortable and heavy weight belt around their middle.

Both weight belts and pockets are meant to be easily removable in the event the diver has an emergency and needs to reach the surface as soon as possible. However, there is a lot against such an action, as uncontrolled buoyant ascents are extremely dangerous themselves and are likely to lead to a burst lung or some other diving emergency – apart from sending diving computers wild and locking you out of any further diving for two or three days!

One way to overcome this problem to some extent is to have both a weight belt and removable weight pockets and distribute the total weight needed between the two systems. This has three benefits:

The weight is spread between the stab jacket and the waist and thus can be more comfortable and manageable than when concentrated in one place.

If one pocket, or the belt accidently becomes loose, it is less likely that the diver is propelled so rapidly and dangerously to the surface. There is a good chance that the ascent can be controlled in some way, possibly with help from the buddy.

If an emergency ascent is required, removal of part of the weighting system is possible, thus allowing for a safer journey to the surface.
